Years ago I designed a version of a monster that was meant to be in a Mercedes commercial. No one ever used the design since they went with a "name" designer. I can't complain really because the design he came up with was really cool.
I ended up using some of the features in another later design which actually was used in a low budget sci-fi channel version of the Beowulf story. Just so yo know - five guys is not enough people to make several hundred shots in a couple of weeks. Those were some long days. I get funny looks from people in the business when I say I worked on stuff like this - it;s like you become some kind of social leper because you worked on a low quality film.
Well those people are likely just not capable of delivering a film at all under the same circumstances. And while some people admire the ability to push back against the machine the eventual result is that even though you might have a better product, it doesn't make sense to the beancounters - they make exactly the same amount of money from a crappy movie on Sci-fi as they dow from a higher quality, higher cost film.
The main reason is the budgets are fixed, the time slot is fixed and the advertising is sold for that slot long before the movie even airs - the money has already been made. The product was sold long before it was finished - so any extra work costs the production company (which I worked for) to go over budget.
We all want to create high quality work - we think that doing something better visually will make the film better overall. That is a trap. Since we worked in post production there was nothing that could be done to save poor story issues, bad acting, missing exposition, or bad focus pulls and lighting.
I admit I put in a lot of "extra" work - staying after hours when there was no overtime. Doing work on my own time at home on the weekends. I wanted to become better personally so the investment for me was worth it even though the films are largely panned, the definitely make money for the companies in the long run - never truly home runs, but definitely a long term profit.
I have quite a decent collection of these creature features under my belt and thankfully it led to much better work later on. But I still get those funny looks from people.
Whoa - hehe cool - that's pretty hard reading - I could barely get through it in school but then again my teacher as a total jerk most of the time. Maybe I should read it again. HA!
hey i saw this movie. it was one of my favorite beowulf movies of the 4 i have seen on scyfy. nice detail on this, from the CG version it was hard to see some of the major details, but i definitely realized where it was from because of those huge elbow whips.
all in all nice work. And, for a low budget film, it was definitely a good movie and it was good that this grendel design was used.
