Mean Old Bird by zeustoves Mean Old Bird by zeustoves
The vulture - at least conceptually - is an old favorite of mine from childhood. What kid doesn't love the idea that you could build a harness and be able to fly giddily flapping around the world like you just don't care about anything.

The original Vulture was anything but a person who had a happy childhood it would seem. Inventor, genius, yes. But also a bitter and vengeful old man. I suppose my gut reaction as an adult to the classic vulture is at worst revulsion and at best humorous.

To a casual observer the original vulture appears to be a reject from a Julie Taymor inspired musical about grumpy old men. HARSH! But I still love the concept - a man who's life's work was stolen from him uses his genius and skills to create the means of his revenge - now THAT"S a Vulture I would love to see made real.

You nailed this one as well, the original design i gotta say isn't THAT bad, my main problem with a lot of the original designs for Spider-man villains is how impractical some of them are, for example, Mysterio's helmet could work as a gas mask, helmet and for theatricality, but it's shape, size and probable weight would probably turn out as a problem, Kraven is literally half-naked, which is dangerous in of itself in combat and is stupid considering the type of weapons he's using (seriously, going half naked while armed with poisonous darts is never a good idea. And he's supposed to be really intellegent), Vulture never really had that but then the theatrical side is not really needed because he only wants revenge when you think about it. It worked in the 60's but now... much less. I like all the bloody cuts and messed-up skin he has though, i'm guessing it's from working on the harness? or maybe an actual interaction with birds?

Thanks man - yeah there is nothing wrong with the concepts of the story behind any of the characters. But I just don't buy any of the visual connections these characters had to their names and histories. I still love the characters - they have a charm. But what they lack is a core truth in appearance I think that such good stories deserve.

And as for the blood, it's actually meant to be the blood of various victims and the fact that real vultures often dig their heads into carcasses covering their heads with blood. I also remember reading stories where villains cry out "I WILL BATHE IN HIS BLOOD!" etc. etc. :-)

Yeah, another problem is that some of these villains were created in different times and just weren't revamped for these times, although the Ultimate comics did a pretty good job with some of the villains.

That gives Vulture a whole new side. He never caught me as the homicidal type but it does begin to grow on me when i think about it. After all, he doesn't really take revenge on anyone by robbing banks. Did you hear that in Spider-Man 4 he apparently had a vulture mech?

No I didn't hear that one about the mech - interesting.

Believe me it would have turned out pretty stupid. The main storyline was Peter having an affair with his fellow College student (after all these years he's still in college), Felicia Hardy on MJ (who also gave birth to his child in the meantime. our hero ladies and gentlemen).

Thanks man - I am personally kind of disappointed in the execution though - I had something much more dramatic in mind but ran out of time. Next time hehe!
