When making Blood and Chrome I thought I would have the lead in designing and animating the new (old) centurions. I was wrong. Design work had already begun by the small team which started on the project before I returned to the studio and that person had never designed a character before. My heart mostly sunk when the decision to go with his design prevailed over mine - which given the tastes of the producer reigning over the production is understandable. It became obvious only later in the production that all of his references in film or television came from the 70s - the era when he was a teenager and those films made the largest impression on him - films like Demon Seed, Where Eagles Dare and a few other notable films from that era. It was known as the era of the anti-hero in films - where the idealism and values of previous decades' films seemed trite.
By the time it became obvious they would be going with another design I was told by my supervisor that it would be alright if I wanted to spend the time finishing this design. I declined. There were too many shots in the pipeline to start tracking and animating and finishing this design would take time away from that. I had already been fiercely competing to try and get this design approved but ultimately lost.
To be honest, I don't why I put everything I had into this design - I didn't own it. My mantra for that year was Indie or DIE! but apparently I still thought I had a shot at creating something if not iconic at least additive to the lore of BSG.
I was heavily influenced by Ben Procter - one of the lead designers on the Transformers films - in fact I think he was the LEAD - period. I emailed Ben once on another matter - but it was decided of my design that it did look a little too "transformers-y" - which now I can understand but at the time I remember thinking that those films did truly set a new high mark for robotic design and execution in film. They garnered an academy nod for it after all and more VES nods afterward.
My only real comfort now is displaying them here and submitting them for another project which I hope to be a part of - and another I won't be able to talk about for at least three years compared to the two I had to wait to reveal this design.
Anyway - thanks for everyone who has fav'd commented, or reposted these somewhere - some people may hate them but at least they are out in the wild - where they were meant to be.
all very cool, except one little thing - his leather/textile shoulders looks like rubber shoulders of Terminator T-600 endoskeleton, although I understand that it's necessary for collar of cape in your design, which in its turn looks in style of new cylon centurion model's collar from BSG
Yeah the leather stuff had another function actually - it was a means to communicate that the centurions were lighter weight than previous models and using more natural materials in a human like way - but it was ultimately shot down in production.
