Wonder Warrior

I heard that October 24 2010 is going to be )unofficially) Wonder Woman day - that's not why I drew this. To be honest I don't remember why I drew it - it's mechanical pencil on regular 11x17 paper (some Blue Line paper I photocopied for the guides and template).

is a friend of mine and his work on Wonder Woman if you haven't already seen it is really terrific - and if you don't like her new costume, you are not alone. I don't know how Drew feels about it but I have no problems saying I don't like it at all. And therein lies the problem.

It's not my character after all, and to be even more honest I think her original costume is utterly ridiculous. When Darwin Cooke made his comments about the state of superhero comics you can just tell he was rattled by her redesign. Rattled is likely a weaker word than he would use.

I like the IDEA of Wonder Woman - the mythical Amazon warrior woman with incredible power and - in my favorite incarnation of her - a terrible temper to boot. In DC's Kingdom Come (as opposed to Marvel's Kingdom Come? HAHA yeah right) I though her character was mong the most interesting and although the modifications to her regular costume were slight the armor she wore in the final battle was a real treat.

If they can manage to tell a compelling story with her in basically what looks like a nightclub outfit on - then so be it. I would prefer she were more Goddess than Desperate Housewife and less Supermodel and more warrior princess.

But I don't buy Wonder Woman - she's just an anachronism to me. I drew a version of her fighting an ancient war - it's place where she fits in very well - more 300 than Watchmen, less Felicity and more Zena.
